Both featuring tales of displacement, Miko Revereza’s DROGA! and Kamal Aljafari’s Recollection recreate familiar landscapes using architectural and cinematographic camouflage to tell a different story. A quirky home movie shot in Super 8, DROGA! traces the material conditions of Los Angeles’ Filipino-Americans. Featuring a punk soundtrack and without a conclusion, the film conveys the forward momentum of a transplanted community dealing with its numerous identity crises. In Recollection, Aljafari recycles Israeli and American feature films shot in the town of Jaffa from the 1960s to 1990s as raw material for his own take on the city. Using Adobe After Effects, he edits out the main protagonists of these movies to refocus the lens on the background. These impersonal images of the town morph into a personal picture album of memories, as the seemingly empty Jaffa becomes a record of an irrevocably transformed city.
