In collaboration with Hong Kong Arts Festival PLUS, Tai Kwun Conversations will host Chinese pianist and early music specialist Yuan Sheng in a lecture demonstration to illustrate the differences between antique and modern pianos.

After its invention in the 18th century, the piano has undergone drastic changes in terms of manufacturing technology and timbre. Sheng will be playing an 1862 Bechstein antique piano as well as a modern grand piano in this lecture demonstration.

Sheng will perform a recital on the antique piano following the lecture. Please refer to the details of the programme here.

This programme will be conducted in Putonghua supplemented with English.

Biography

Yuan Sheng

Professor of Piano, Central Conservatory of Music

Chinese pianist and early music specialist Yuan Sheng is Professor of Piano at the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music. He has gained international recognition through his extensive performances in more than twenty countries, and is especially known for his interpretation and research on Bach, for which he is called “The nation (China)’s premier interpreter of Bach”. His understanding and command on harpsichord, clavichord and early pianos have also garnered a lot of praise.
