General

This July, two consecutive Tai Kwun Conversations foster a reflection and discussion around key challenges and creative solutions in heritage revitalisation. What are the guiding intervention principles for a living site? Contextualising innovative projects that harmonise new construction with its heritage surrounds, the talks explore how historic landmarks relate to the dynamics of local development and offer new spaces for community, arts and culture. The two international speakers will connect online with our Hong Kong audiences.

Peter Tonkin examines the issues surrounding the conversion of a nationally-significant heritage-listed timber wharf structure into an intensively-programmed cultural performing arts centre. The Pier, dating from the 1920s, is constructed on timber piles over Sydney Harbour and is nearly 150 metres long. It is being adapted to accommodate the performance and production facilities of three major arts companies, under the direction of the NSW Ministry of the Arts. Demanding fire-proofing and acoustic issues are balanced with the conservation of its heritage values, including the dramatic exposed timber structure.

The event will be conducted in English.
